Calling All Dreamers: This is How To Approach Your Big Goals

Last week I shared about why you don’t need the perfect plan to get started.

But beyond logically understand the concept of not getting stuck in the “how” of everything, do you still feel overwhelmed around where, exactly, to start?

If so, you’re not alone!

Most of my clients have big visions, which is so fun, but can also result in thoughts like: “There’s SO much I want to do – where do I even begin?!”

If you’re sitting there wondering the same thing, I want you to start by thinking about Google Maps.

the google maps approach to goal achievement

Yep, Google maps. Bring that interface to mind…

First, you type in and select a destination.

From there, you can scope the list of steps to get a general idea of your route.

Then you press start, and you’re given the very first, immediate step — the next left or right you need to make.

Once that’s complete, you’re given the next step. And then the next one. And so it continues until you finally arrive.

Sometimes, if you’re like me, you might skip one step ahead to get a glimpse of upcoming turns or freeway exits.

But, overall, you pretty much focus on one step at a time to get to your destination.

(Sidenote: anyone remember Mapquest?!)

ACTIVATING YOUR PERSONAL GPS

Guess what? You have a built-in system just like Google maps — one that, at any point, knows exactly where to go next.

All you need to do is ask yourself two questions…

  1. What’s your destination? (aka the big goal you’re working towards)

  2. What’s the next small step towards it? (ideally something bite-size that you can do in 30 minutes or less)

Sometimes when I ask clients what their next immediate, small step is, an idea immediately springs forward. If that’s the case for you, awesome! Take a moment to appreciate your own inner guidance at work.

Other times, clients will respond with “I don’t know.” If you’re stuck in the land of “I don’t know,” answer me this: if you did know the next step, what would it be?

Because “I don’t know” isn’t the truth. It’s just your mind indulging in confusion so that you can stay in the safe territory of not moving forward.

Challenge yourself to play with what the next step could be without committing to anything, and see what comes up.

The truth is: you always know. Your internal GPS cannot and will not fail you. You just have to tune in long enough — patiently enough — to hear its guidance.

To moving towards your next destination,
