How To Stop Self-Judgment In Its Tracks
The other day I woke up and felt SO tired. My brain wanted to make it mean all of these different things.
That I didn’t rest enough this weekend.
That I pushed myself too hard last week.
That I won’t have the energy to do everything I want to do today.
My inner critic could’ve easily had a field day with all of these statements, but I know how that plays out. I’ve been there before, and the added layer of judgment makes things way worse than they need to be.
Instead of frustration, I chose allowing. Opening. Accepting. Letting the tiredness be there, and getting curious: I wonder why I feel so tired this morning? Did I get enough sleep? Do I need to move my body more? Am I needing to release some emotion?
And then, I found it: thai tea.
Oooooh, yeah. I forgot that stuff is caffeinated. I drank it before bed. That explains why I had so much trouble falling asleep…and why I slept pretty restlessly too. I’m sensitive to caffeine, and I drank a caffeinated beverage at 9:30pm. That’s all there is to it. Mystery solved!
It’s moments like these where I am SO thankful for curiosity — yet again, it helped me avoid unnecessary pain.
My human brain, like all human brains, loves to assign meaning to things. But when we slow down, allow what’s there to be there, and get curious…we see that there’s nothing wrong with us, there isn’t a problem, and (perhaps) there is indeed a very simple explanation just waiting to be uncovered.
The next time you notice self-judgment taking over, take a moment. Get curious. Look closer. See what’s there. It might very well be a classic case of drinking a caffeinated beverage before bed! And if you have a habit of judging yourself, you should know that: a) there is nothing wrong with you, and b) it’s time to give your mind (and heart) a break.
Trust me, it is SO much harder to take your business to the next level when the critical voice in your head is the one with the megaphone. It’s exhausting, and the reason why so many entrepreneurs burn out before they reach their full potential.
There is a better way. It involves pinpointing all of the areas where your energy is currently leaking, and patching them up with love while also redirecting your attention to the things that actually create momentum in your business. Start by getting curious, and taking the fast lane out of self-judgment and into self-compassion.
