5 Steps to Keep Your Stress Low & Your Standards High

If you're anything like me, you find great satisfaction in doing things well...but you also have a tendency to hunker down and do whatever it takes to get the job done — even at your own expense.

You don't want to settle for a lower standard, but you're also tired of stretching beyond your capacity when you're working towards the things that matter to you.

So what do you do?

Here are the 5 steps I recommend for keeping your standards high without stressing yourself out in the process:

  1. Decide that your energy is your #1 priority, instead of something you can steamroll now and tend to later. Make plans to cover the basics like getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, eating enough food, getting movement and fresh air, and taking breaks as needed.

  2. Define your end goal. Get clear on what a successful outcome entails + how it feels.

  3. Prioritize and plan the next steps needed to create the end result you want.

  4. Delegate or drop unnecessary steps.

  5. Take action on your refined, intentional to-do list.

This is very different than approaching your goal with a giant to-do list of steps, diving right in, grinding through things, and then only resting once you're done.

This is what it's like to show up as a calm, grounded CEO instead of as a frantic, overworked (but high-performing) employee.

This is how you get to keep the "high performing" part without the stress.

Why does this matter?

Because how things feel in the process is how they feel in the end. So if you're stressed out the whole way to your goal, you can bet you'll still feel stressed and exhausted when you get there.

Not just that, but you spend 99% of your life "in the process".

So define the end result you want for sure, but don't forget to prioritize your energy and also focus on how you want to feel before/during/after too.

What would it be like to move through your to-do list and cross the finish line with an overflow of energy, a feeling of satisfaction as things come together, and the presence to fully enjoy what you’ve created?
