What To Do When Clients Quit

One of the least fun parts of growing any service-based business is having clients quit.

First of all, I don't know any seasoned business owner who hasn't had a client quit before. It's simply part of the game of entrepreneurship.

It's normal to feel sad or disappointed when this happens, but if you're finding that a client quitting is knocking you off your game completely, today's email should help you move forward with more ease.

Here's how I recommend handling the situation:

Step 1 - Catch your inner critic in their tracks. Don't let your mind run wild with stories about being bad at what you do, not cut out for this, etc.

It's impossible to move forward in any productive way when you're spinning out in self-judgment and beating yourself up over what happened.

If the thoughts going through your mind feel mean, they're not your truth. Simple as that.

Once you can see those thoughts for what they are, it will immediately take away some of their power, which will enable you to move on to Step 2.

Step 2 - Evaluate the situation by exploring two perspectives simultaneously:

1: Consider how it's not personal.

How this is part of the game, part of growth, and also a reflection of where that person is at on their journey?

How is this person not an ideal client?

What red or yellow flags did you potentially miss upfront that you could look out for in the future?

2. Consider the role you played in the situation (in a non-judgmental way) and how you can improve your process moving forward.

Maybe you tweak your marketing to attract clients who are all-in from the start, or update your consultation process to vet people on a deeper level.

Maybe you've noticed that clients tend to lose steam 2 months into your program, so you decide to mentally prep them for that in the beginning, and then have some kind of additional support baked into that timeframe.

Maybe you realize in hindsight that you knew this client wasn't an ideal fit from the start, but you were blinded by wanting to create more business and convinced yourself it was fine.

The key is to be super duper kind to yourself as you move through this.

You'll only be able to access true wisdom when your mind is open vs. bogged down in self-judgment.

View it all as a learning opportunity.

No shaming necessary.
