The 7 Steps to Shift Out of Overwhelm

Feeling overwhelmed? Use this simple, 7-step process to turn things around ASAP:

1. Do a brain dump and get everything in your head down on paper.

2. Glance over your list and take in what you've written.

(You're now the observer of your thoughts vs. swimming in them)

3. Offer yourself some compassion.

I love the phrase “OF COURSE,” as in: “Of COURSE I feel overwhelmed right now. I’m telling myself I have to do it all today, and this is a pretty long list…"

Create your own “Of course” statement by finishing this sentence: “Of course I feel overwhelmed, I _______…"

4. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you can do it all, but not all at once.

Given that...

5. Choose what stays & what goes by asking yourself:

  • What’s most important (aka a real priority for me right now)?

  • What do I most WANT to do?

These are the items to keep on your to-do list.

Then, cross out the things that feel like should’s, need to’s, or have to’s.

When in doubt, follow this rule: if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no.

6. Schedule the items on your updated list.

Set yourself up for success by setting aside more time than you think you'll need for everything. Better to under-promise and over-deliver here.

7. Choose ONE small task to complete. Bonus points if you do it right now ;)
